AEN System Pivotal in Search for Missing Girl
Confronting a grim situation and the need to immediately and repeatedly reach a wide audience, officials of Florida’s Putnam County took advantage of their ready access to AEN’s broadcast system during the search for a missing 5-year-old girl.
Seeking the help of the media and the general public, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office transmitted seven live video briefings over AEN’s network, bringing its appeals to a much larger number of people than previously possible.
“The simplicity of the AEN system meant that we could react quickly to bring the system online to ensure that time sensitive information was sent out quickly,” said Jayson Southworth, Putnam County’s emergency management senior planner.
“The AEN system was pivotal in its ability to disseminate detailed information regarding the search for this little girl to stakeholders. Local and national news organizations could then use the AEN information to inform their own viewers,” he said.
“The compiled video will be used by local law enforcement as a valuable training tool for Public Information Officers,” Southworth said. “These officers will have the ability to look back at the press conferences and fine-tune future information for the greatest impact.”
Live briefings were available to the public on The Miami Herald website as well as the website for Jacksonville’s Florida Times-Union.
AEN’s New Products Draw Crowds at FEPA
Dozens of emergency management personnel from throughout the state took advantage of an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with America’s Emergency Network’s newest product offerings during last month’s Florida Emergency Preparedness Association’s annual conference in Orlando.
Demonstrations of AEN’s state-of-the-art, instant-on communications system attracted representatives of 25 county emergency operations centers, six cities, and two federal agencies to the company’s booth. The conference ran from February 10th through the 12th, allowing plenty of time for attendees to familiarize themselves with AEN’s products and capabilities.
“This was an excellent opportunity for interested attendees to view the quality of the video, experience the ease of use of our systems, and learn about our new, low-cost pricing options,” said Janis Farnham, AEN’s vice president of sales and marketing.

Scores of Emergency Managers Briefed by AEN’s Norcross and Mayfield
As another hurricane season approaches, top managers of America’s Emergency Network have embarked on a series of briefings to introduce AEN’s now-operational service to emergency managers throughout Florida.
Bryan Norcross, AEN’s President and Chief Executive officer, and former National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield, now AEN’s Senior Executive Vice President of
Government Relations, met earlier this month with more than 50 emergency managers and other officials from a wide variety of Broward County government offices and other entities.
“When I was at the National Hurricane Center, my bosses sometimes told me that I sounded too much like an emergency manager, and I was always proud of that,” Mayfield told members of Broward’s Emergency Coordinating Council. “Studies show that most people respond to what their local officials tell them to do during emergencies, and that’s why you’re so important and what you do is so important.”
Broward’s ECC (Emergency Coordinating Council) was created to foster coordination and cooperation between county government, local governments and public and private organizations that serve the public during disasters and other emergencies.

Demonstrating AEN’s pioneering Internet and satellite-based transmission system, Norcross emphasized that it was created to help emergency managers at all levels broadcast crucial information – instantly and directly – to affected citizens, companies, healthcare facilities and others.
“The idea is to create conduits through the media directly to the public from the Hurricane Center and the state, but also from individual municipalities and departments,” said Norcross, former hurricane analyst for the CBS television network. “AEN makes it affordable for governmental entities of any size to communicate directly with the public.”
This direct link to citizens through the Internet and television is particularly important at a time when media outlets are shedding staff and eliminating coverage of local governments and agencies, making it nearly impossible for those entities to get their messages out through conventional media coverage, Norcross told the emergency managers.
