AEN Expands Product Line, Creates
Low-Cost Options

Product LineA year that promises to be exciting, busy and noteworthy for America’s Emergency Network is being launched with the unveiling of a new, expanded and affordable product line – one that gives any government agency, school, or business the ability to send live video to broadcast outlets and media websites.

This wide variety of AEN configurations is now available for installation at emergency operations centers, schools, businesses, government agencies, media outlets and any other organization that needs to affordably send and/or receive live video.

The AEN product line includes:

• Stream Broadcaster SB-1000 – Streams live video by Internet and/or satellite
• Low-Delay Stream Broadcaster SR-5000 – Includes live interviewing capability
• Stream Receiver SB-1500 – Receives live video by Internet and/or satellite
• Low-Delay Stream Receiver SR-5500 – Receives live interview video streams
• Disaster Ready DR-500 – Back-up phone and Internet by satellite

All systems offer access to AEN’s state-of-the-art Internet- and satellite-based communications network – a system designed along with Hughes Network Systems to work before, during, and especially after a disaster knocks out power lines, cell phone towers and other conventional but vulnerable communications systems.

“We carefully created this array of products and services so that every operation of any size can provide its citizens or customers with vital information transmitted over AEN’s secure, reliable network,” said Janis Farnham, AEN’s vice president of sales and marketing.

AEN’s 5000/5500 series Broadcasters and Receivers are used by media outlets to conduct interviews with public officials utilizing the same infrastructure that is used to send briefings to the public.

Low-cost Options

Each AEN Stream Broadcaster is available in multiple configurations, including new packages that allow news briefings to be streamed to media outlets and websites at minimal cost. A similar Stream Receiver package allows TV outlets to decode, display, and air those streams at very low cost. All of the entry-level packages are upgradable in the future.

For more information, please contact Janis Farnham at janis@aen911.com or at (305) 722-4800.

Glitches Hit Emergency Alert Systems At Two Universities

Anxieties recently experienced by students at the University of Florida and the University of Georgia illustrate the vulnerabilities of some email- and cell phone-based campus emergency alert systems.

Students and staff on UF’s main campus in Gainesville were shocked on Jan. 20, Inauguration Day, when they received an apparently racist message through the school’s emergency alert system.

Police launched an investigation and officials of Mobile Campus, which runs the service at UF and many other schools, acknowledged that an unauthorized individual sent the message through the company’s system.

"We're working diligently to get to the bottom of it," Mobile Campus CEO David Liniado told The Gainesville Sun.
A few days earlier, students at the University of Georgia were awakened at 6:10 a.m. by an alert erroneously sent to the entire data base.

The message about a possible fire was intended for the school’s Hazardous Assessment Response Team, but someone hit the wrong button.

"It was an honest mistake," University Police Chief Jimmy Williamson told The Red and Black, a newspaper that serves University of George students. “They just moved a little too quickly."

Craig Fugate: “A Successful Team Leader”

Craig Fugate, the nationally respected   director of the Florida Division of Emergency   Management, is the subject of an   appropriately upbeat profile in his hometown   Alachua County Today weekly newspaper.

  The newspaper reports:
His philosophy is that of a system approach to emergency management.

“There are things that could be done more effectively by building teams instead of agencies trying to solve problems by themselves,” he said. “We build teams out of different agencies that don’t work with each other everyday, but have to in certain situations to be successful.”

AEN Highlighted in State of Florida Report

The Florida Division of Emergency   Management’s latest Annual Report makes   prominent mention of AEN’s role during the   busy 2008 hurricane season.

Working on the fly, AEN converted an ongoing   beta test into operational mode and streamed live briefings during Tropical Storm Fay’s disastrous sweep through Florida and during the threats from Hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike.

“America’s Emergency Network successfully launched a beta-test with the State and several local emergency management offices,” the DEM annual report noted, “and is building a network to provide a greater voice and access to information to both residents and response agencies.”
